The corner
of 87th.
Eighty-Seventh Street knows good food. It always has. Between Burnside and Avalon Park, past the church lots and the barbershops, this stretch of the South Side has fed generations of Chicago families on Sunday dinners and celebration plates.
Smoke's Bistro sits right in the middle of it, behind a set of iron gates that open onto seventy seats of white-tablecloth dining the neighborhood was long overdue for. Upscale, not fine dining: elevated without being above anyone, here for the community rather than over it.

Fire is
the recipe.
Everything at Smoke's starts over flame, in one of the last scratch kitchens on this side of the city. Lamb chops char-grilled until the edges catch. Salmon seared hard and glazed. Chicken tips finished with mild sauce, because on this side of the city that isn't a condiment, it's a birthright.
Real food. Real ingredients. Made fresh.
Nothing dropped frozen, nothing pre-made. The menu moves with the kitchen: seafood platters stacked with catfish and shrimp, lamb sausage pizza out of the oven, garlic-butter biscuits that don't survive the first ten minutes on the table. Elevated flavor, unforgettable experience.

Chef
Smoke.
Twenty-plus years in the culinary arts, working his way up through some of Chicagoland's high-end kitchens. It was the staff meals that gave him away: dishes he'd invent between services, until the head chef he looked up to tasted one and told him, "I would buy that." He heard it again, and took it as his cue.
He wrote his two weeks' notice and bet on himself. The catering business that followed started slow, months of silence after walking away from steady work, and then the phone rang. It hasn't stopped ringing since: catering grew into two restaurants that took off back to back, and those built the road to this one.
Smoke's Bistro is his first upscale dining room, seventy seats on the street he cooks for. From takeout and catering to white tablecloths: a blessing, and a testimony.
